Totnes is known as an attractive market town and the market is very much part of the town’s identity. It has had a market for many centuries. Until 1955, the space the pannier market now occupies was a covered Market Hall that burnt down.
South Hams District Council owns the Market Square area and operates the regular Friday, Saturday, and Sunday markets. Devon County Council have responsibility for the highway that traverses the Market Square and Totnes Town Council manage and maintain the Civic Hall.
